Apple iPod classic 160 GB Silver (7th Generation) NEWEST MODEL
Pro:
- The best looking/best designed piece of little hardware! No worthy competition I saw at the local Best Buy in this department.- The weight, handling, and the wheel+arrows driven user interface are fantastic, better than anything I've seen or used, computers, DSLR, HiFi, cellphone, etc, truly world class!
- 160GB is great, 1.6T would be better. But that'll have to wait for later (lets hope not too late).
- Browsing through the multi GB worth of data is amazingly fast, breathtaking comparing to my dear computers. This alone is worth the cost: I don't need to go through the piles of CDs and whatever else to get to the music I want now. What a treat! (at the expense of sound quality for the time being at least) Only wish I could do the same for my tons of LPs...
- Battery life is great, a major major plus for me.
- Photo and Videos look better here than on YouTube, small but better. nice!
- My CD music no longer skips! Ya, I actually threw away some of my older CDs when they skipped thinking it must be the scratches. Am I wrong and sorry now! Turns out it's all the fault of the CD players rather than the CD. Now I just need to find ways to hook up my iPod to my car...
Neutral:
- Sound quality is really so so, on par with the cheap CD walkman, definitely nothing to brag about. The reasons might include: 1. data compression, 2, battery saving, and 3. the music player (hardware/software)itself. 160GB sounds like a lot but real hi-def sound file is huge, not to mention real HD movie/video clips. Then of course there's the USB2 speed limit (try to load 160TB through USB2 and you'll see). So given where the technology is today, this pod is a great compromise, if not the best.
- Hard drive based storage can be a liability in the longer run because of its mechanical moving parts. I don't use it for running at all. Try to treat it with respect and hope it'll last long enough. After all, it's quite time consuming to put 160G worth of stuff into this little baby. Then again, this is the limitation of technology, not just Apple. 160GB flash probably will cost more than this pod, if it exists today.
- The LCD Display is smallish, clear but smallish by the standards of the 2009-2010. Good for face shots but not much else.
- The minimalistic design does sacrifise some convenience, try to manipulate photo slide show and music playing at the same time for example. There's no zoom on the pictures. Ya, iPod Touch does. But the classic is 160G vs the 64G or so and a much longer battery life, and cheaper price. So to me this is not a con for the Classic, but rather part of the compromise I sign up for.
Con:
- Even though iPod has a long list of unsupported popular file formats, it doesn't automatically convert any of them on the fly when trying to add to the library. There's no warning either about the fact that the incompatible files (wma, avi, etc) were left un-imported.
- The shiny shell is so easy to get smeared, scratched and dirty. The after market holder/cover/container on the market are bulky, ugly, and over priced. To me, they completely defeat the beauty of the Pod. What a pity!
- The cord of the earbuds is too long and stiff. A light weight hidden coiled cord like the kind used by the secret service agents in the movies for example, would be a far better match to iPod.
